This illustration is a study of the Mary River turtle, a unique freshwater species native to Australia, known for its distinctive appearance and ancient lineage.
I was especially drawn to its textures and quiet character. The long neck, the weight of the shell, and the way it rests along a moss covered log. Using layers of colored pencil, I focused on capturing subtle shifts in color and form, from the soft, weathered tones of the skin to the depth and variation within the shell.
This piece is part of an ongoing exploration of turtle species and their habitats, where I aim to balance scientific observation with a calm, natural presence.
