Colored pencil in paper

9 X 6 Inches

This illustration is a study of the Mata mata turtle, a remarkable freshwater species native to South America, known for its highly textured, leaf-like appearance and distinctive silhouette.

I was especially drawn to its intricate forms. The sculptural shell, the irregular edges, and the layered textures along the neck and skin. Using colored pencil, I built up the surface gradually to capture those complex details and subtle tonal shifts, allowing the form to emerge in a natural and organic way.

The Mata mata’s camouflage and stillness give it an almost prehistoric presence. In this piece, I focused on that sense of quiet intensity, with the turtle emerging from its environment rather than standing apart from it.

This illustration is part of an ongoing exploration of turtle species and their habitats, balancing scientific observation with a calm, natural presence.
