This illustration is a study of the painted turtle, a widespread freshwater species known for its elegant markings and vibrant coloration.
In this piece, I focused on the curvature of the shell and the way light moves across its surface. Using layers of colored pencil, I built up subtle shifts in tone and color to create a sense of volume and a soft, natural sheen, while still preserving the structure of each scute.
The contrast between the deep greens of the shell and the bright red and yellow markings along the skin adds to the sense of form, guiding the eye across the turtle as it rests along the log.
This illustration is part of an ongoing exploration of turtle species and their habitats, balancing scientific observation with a calm, natural presence.
